Water Carrying Woman, sculpted by Matthew Lanz.

The Water Carrying Woman
statue helps tell this Lakota woman’s story and the sacred tie between humans and earth’s life-giving water. She will be portrayed holding a bison bladder vessel above her head from which water flows. Her statue with flowing water will stand in view of the vast Missouri River waters.

Water Carrying Woman has arrived in Tatanka Trail near the bridge and she is beautiful. Come see the detail in this statue created by sculptor Mathew Lanz. There is a wonderful story that this statue represents related to the Blue Water Creek raid by General Harney’s Army. There was an unveiling for this statue on July 3rd after a program at Drifters. There was also an unveiling of the Lopez Dupree buffalo statue on the same date.

If all go as planned, you will get to see Mr. Lanz’s work in another statue of Pierre Chouteau, Jr., who operated American Fur Company that established Fort Pierre Chouteau west of Fort Pierre on Highway 1806. Plans are for the Pierre Chouteau statue to be located in Tatanka Trail Park also.

Having these historical sculptures in our midst will make it feel like you are stepping back in history when you walk around the town. Thank you to the Fort Pierre Sculpture Committee and the donors for making this happen. Go to www.fortpierresculptures.com for more information or pick up a brochure at the Log Cabin Visitor Center.
